uMngeni-uThukela Water has resumed the supply of water to the uMzumbe and uMdoni Local Municipalities under the Ugu District following the successful completion of repairs to the Mthwalume Raw Water Abstraction System.
The abstraction system was damaged by heavy rainfall experienced over the weekend, which washed away the temporary weir used to draw water from the Mthwalume River. As a result, operations at the Mthwalume Water Treatment Works were disrupted, and the raw water submersible pumps were also displaced during the storm.
uMngeni-uThukela Water technical teams worked around the clock to restore the system and were able to complete the repairs ahead of schedule.
While repair work has been completed and water supply has resumed, the system has not yet fully stabilised due to high water turbidity levels caused by ongoing river conditions.
