Media and Public Notice: Emergency shutdown of 2 Nagle aqueducts to assess and restore production shorfall

Friday, 03 July 2026

Durban Heights Waterworks which supplies bulk treated water to major parts of the eThekwini Metro Municipality will be shutting down 2 of its 4 aqueducts to assess and remove a possible blockage on one of its aqueducts. The shutdown, which started at 10am this morning, will conclude this afternoon at 3pm.

A duration of 5 hours is required to safely isolate the aqueduct lines and to then allow for submerged access to the inlets and to also remove the current stop block in place.

The plant usually meets a demand of 580 Ml/day but during the shut period the plant will only be able to safely produce 530Ml/day. So in that shut period production is expected to drop by 9% only and the remaining demands will still be available and supplied.

The shut is for a short duration and is necessary to restore full capacity supply to 3 of its waterworks that its supplies once possible blockages are removed.

The shutdown will affect parts of the outer west of eThekwini which are supplied from the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works.

We encourage users to use water sparingly in this period. UUW apologises for the inconvenience caused to affected stakeholders
