PUBLIC NOTICE: STORM DAMAGE TO MTHWALUME WATER TREATMENT WORKS AFFECTS WATER SUPPLY TO PARTS OF THE UGU DISTRICT

Monday, 22 December 2025

The heavy rainfall experienced over the weekend has caused damage to uMngeni-uThukela Water’s Mthwalume Raw Water Abstraction System, which supplies water to the uMzumbe and uMdoni Local Municipalities under the Ugu District.

The temporary weir used to abstract water from the Mthwalume River was washed away during the storm. As a result, the Mthwalume Water Treatment Works is currently unable to abstract raw water for treatment due to the displacement of the raw water submersible pumps.
Extensive repair work is required to restore the system to full operation. uMngeni-uThukela Water has deployed additional technical and operational resources to accelerate the recovery process. We anticipate that the work will be completed over the coming days, subject to fair weather conditions.

The damage to the Mthwalume System has affected water supply to the following areas:
Elysium, Bazley, Ifafa, Koelwater, Sezela, Mthwalume Urban, Qoloqolo, Nomakhazana, Sibanini,
Bhekulwandle, Mfazazana, Sihlonyaneni, Section 26, Arnold Lushaba Hospital, Nkambini, Bhunwini,
Makhoso, Bangibizo, Dembese, Mathulini, Nyangwini, and Mgangeni.

uMngeni-uThukela Water sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused and assures affected
communities that every effort is being made to restore water supply as swiftly as possible. Further updates will be communicated as progress is made.

WE ALSO URGE THE PUBLIC TO CONTINUE TO USE WATER SPARINGLY
